Matosu Farm is located in Todee district in Montserrado County, Liberia. The land spans about 130 acres and comprises a large swamp that is fed by a perennial creek, slightly undulating upland areas with agricultural plots, and a big secondary forest.
Parts of the swamp are laid out for rice cultivation, while fruit, including pineapples, plantains, and bananas, and vegetables, such as chili peppers, eggplants, and cassava, grow in the cultivated upland areas where the farm also has oil palm, mango, avocado, and lime trees. The farm is home to pigs, chickens, and guinea fowl, as well as a range of wildlife.
The land is perched between three small villages with a population below 50 people each: Sonnie Town, Sando Town, and Marto Town. The next bigger town with a school is about 3.5 km away, and the next clinic and weekly market are in Pleemu Town, at a distance of about 10km.
The farm can be accessed by road and rail, though the latter currently only carries goods from the Bong mines to the port in Monrovia.
To develop and run a sustainable and regenerative permaculture model farm that meets the nutritional and medicinal needs of employees, students, volunteers and visitors and creates a surplus that can support local communities and be processed and sold for income.
To develop and offer training in regenerative premaculture, nutrition, traditional medicine and sustainable construction to local farmers, community members, students and visitors.
To set up and run a recreational space for agritourism that generates income where people can come for a weekend in nature, enjoy the abundance produced at Matosu Farm and learn about regenerative permaculture.
To create a space that brings community members together, strengthens their resilience, and contributes to peacebuilding.
Matosu Farm addresses undernourishment and malnutrition in Liberia and supports people to be more self-reliant and productive in agriculture while working with nature. It is an educational farm and recreational site for agritourism. It brings people together, strengthens community resilience, and contributes to peacebuilding.
The mission is to develop Matosu Farm into a self-reliant model farm, training site, recreational space and community hub that builds on permaculture principles. In so doing, Matosu Farm employs appropriate technologies that are regenerative, sustainable and replicable with locally available materials at low cost and with minimal technical know-how.
